My Chinese Class and Me 我和我的中文课

Hello, everyone! My name is Liu Wei and I come from China. I grew up in China and have graduated from Jilin University last summer. When I was in the university, my major was English teaching and minor was German. It was first year for me to go aboard and teach Chinese in the USA. I worked at a middle school in Sauk Rapids in Minnesota. I taught the Chinese language and culture for each rotation for 17 days as an Allied Art teacher. For ten days, I will basically teach Chinese basic greetings and characters for ten eighth graters and seven graters too, for the rest of days, I will introduce some Chinese culture, like making paper-cuttings and Chinese calligraphy.

In the passed two weeks, I taught some basic greetings in Chinese and how to count numbers in Chinese for both 7th graters and 8th graters. At the same time we did paper-cuttings and Chinese calligraphy during the Chinese class. They did enjoying the making paper-cuttings and making calligraphy. One of the most challenge I faced last two weeks is classroom management. For some kids who are really talkative, they can not control themselves speaking and can not recognize what time they should listen to the teacher. I tried different ways to help them to focus on the works they should do. The most effective way to let them pay more attention to listen to the teacher is always encouraging them, asking them questions and making a conversation with them. Because every kids will feel comfortable when they were noticed. Especially when they give the right answers to the questions and all the others will give them a hand.

IMG_0026.JPG

Colorful Masks

Beijing Opera is one of the most important Chinese cultural heritages. I spent the who class to introduce the origin of opera mask and the classical stories to my students. We talked about the difference between Eastern and Western masks. What’s more, I showed a folk art video, how quickly the performers switch the masks. They were totally surprised by watching it. Even some of them want to try to learn that magic. Some of my students really enjoyed wearing masks and customs and playing an important role in the stories of popular opera. For example, being the hero, Yu Guan, who is the one of the bravest general in the Three Kingdoms. In addition to, I taught some new words to my students, like how to say red in Chinese and what the specific meaning of each color in the Beijing Opera.

img_0034

Being Creative

Paper-cutting is one of the most important and popular Chinese folk art, celebrating wedding and childbirth. People can choose any patterns they can from their daily life. The art comes from real life but it’s higher than life. I took a few moments to introduce the origin about the paper and paper-cutting folk art. After showing the common patterns and colors on paper-cutting to my students, they focused on creating their art works. Some of them challenged to make the most difficult one and some of them created the new one. Everyone has different minds and can make a difference.

img_0008

Focusing

For the 8th graders in the middle school, it is not necessary for them to learn Chinese. Because they do have Chinese in the high school. But most of them still focus on learning Chinese and studying hard every daily day. Some of them took very neatly notes to prepare the pop quiz or Chinese test. It is first time for them to explore a foreign language, especially for learning how to write the Chinese characters and make a difference between the five speaking tones. Most time they tell me “Ms. Liu, I am so confused, are you Ms. Six?” at that time, I am always happy and explaining the tones part. I am so proud of my kids how hard they study and how much they love Chinese class.

IMG_0019.JPG

Chinese Calligraphy

Chinese calligraphy is a visual art and originated and developed from China.
Today we had a very successful calligraphy class. My students were so excited about “painting”. Actually,it is not painting but writing on the rice paper. After enjoying the video, they could wait to have a try and created their art works.First of all, I give them some newspaper to practice the Chinese characters on it, then then could pick a word from google and imitated it on the rice paper which is very soft and best paper for doing calligraphy. The most difficult part is holding the writing brush for my students.Because the writing brush is not a pencil, people should hold it vertically and couldn’t touch the desk with the wrists while they were practicing  writing. It is so hard for the beginners to hold the writing brush. My students did a very good job.

Thankful Week

In order to celebrate the coming Thanksgiving holiday, I ask all my students make a pink heart card to write down some sweet words to the person whom they want to say thank you. During the whole class, my students talked the similarity and difference between Chinese “thanksgiving” and American. Mid-autumn Day is the Chinese Thanksgiving, wherever people are, they will go they anyway to spend the very moment with their family and enjoy the pure moon light. I also showed a video about sign language with the deaf-mute dancers. At the same time, my students learned how to say thank you and I love you in Chinese. It is a good time for them to try to write down some Chinese characters on the card and share the appreciation with their family.

IMG_0029.JPG

Do you like Chinese food?

It is my second year here to teach Chinese in the middle school. I found that there more and more students have tried Chinese food in Sauk Rapids than last year. Even some of them can use chopsticks to pick up food and noodles. In the past week, I used two class hour to introduce some common food ,dessert and snacks in China. I showed a video about how people make noodles and dumplings at home, in fact, most of season food or festival food are homemade. My students were so surprised that people can make noodles as thin as hair.Another interesting thing for them is sugar painting, which is street food and people can eat it. Some girls even want to make it by themselves at home. What’s more, kids really enjoyed playing chopsticks game even though they could’t use it very well.

IMG_0030.JPG

Movie Day

As an Allied Art class, there are 10 rotations of my Chinese class. Each of rotation has one day to watch Chinese movie, usually the last day of the rotation. Some time I show Mulan or Kungfu Panda to my students. Before they watch the movie, they will make a survey about what is KungFu, who is Mulan, what’s the difference between Qi and Kungfu and so on. After that, they can enjoy the movies with the questions. It is one of the most important way to learn and explore another culture by watching movies. If they have any questions about the movie, I can pause the video and explain it immediately.
